The Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library

Private Life, Political Legacy

Housed in the Mitchell Memorial Library, the gallery explores four key eras of President Grant’s life – childhood, military General, President, and continued public service. Exhibits contextualize Grant’s political legacy, viewed through the lens of character traits like courage, loyalty, and determination.

Guests encounter full-size cast figures of Grant, film presentations, interactive media, and collections – objects including a plaster copy of his death mask. After Learning about pervasive historical myths regarding Grant via digital interface, they can form their own ideas about how public opinion shapes identity.
