Determined: The 400-Year Struggle for Black Equality

Exploring The Black American Experience

In 1619, the first enslaved Africans landed in British North America; Determined commemorates this 400th anniversary, putting the Black American experience in context with the Commonwealth’s history using interactive AV media, bold interpretive graphics, and hands-on activities.

Exhibits take the guest on a journey through eras − from the colonial period to today, featuring artifact collections and profiles of individuals who fought for freedom, equal justice, and access to opportunities. At the end of the exhibition, guests are invited to reflect, responding to questions such as “Who inspires you?” and “What does equality mean to you?”
